Sedation in children for dental treatments

Sedation for children in dentistry helps little ones relax during dental treatments. It is useful for children with fear of the dentist or who require lengthy procedures. Administered by professionals, it ensures a comfortable and stress-free dental experience.

Types of sedation used

At Dr. Andrea Contreras’ clinic, we offer several types of sedation for children:

Mild sedation

We use nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” to help children feel relaxed. This type of sedation is safe and its effects wear off quickly. Children remain conscious and can communicate, but they feel calm and free of anxiety, facilitating the dental treatment.

Moderate sedation

For longer or more complex procedures, we use oral sedatives that keep children conscious but very relaxed and calm. This type of sedation allows children to be awake but in a state of deep calm, significantly reducing discomfort and stress during dental treatment.

Deep sedation

In special cases, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia may be used to ensure that the child is completely asleep during the procedure. This option is used for extensive treatments or when the child has a high level of anxiety. A certified anesthesiologist supervises the entire process to ensure patient safety.

Benefits of sedation for children

1. Reduction of fear and anxiety: Sedation allows children to feel relaxed and less anxious, facilitating the necessary dental treatments without emotional trauma.

2. Faster and more efficient procedures: When calm, children can cooperate better, allowing dentists to work more quickly and efficiently.

3. Positive experience in the clinic: By having a pain-free and stress-free experience, children develop a positive attitude towards dental visits, fostering good long-term dental health habits.

Is sedation safe for children?

Yes, dental sedation for children is safe when administered by trained professionals. In our clinic, Dr. Andrea Contreras and her team follow strict safety protocols to ensure the well-being of their young patients. Before any sedation procedure, we conduct a thorough health assessment of the child to determine the most appropriate and safe type of sedation.
